What is Patella?

The patella is located in front of the knee joint, its position is relatively superficial, and it is easy to touch with hands. The patella is part of the knee extensor mechanism, that is, the patella is an important bone that connects the muscles of the thigh and the muscles in the front of the calf.

What are functions of Patella ?

When the muscles connecting the tibia are fully stretched, the patella can help straighten the knee joint, keeping the tibia and femur in a horizontal line, thus playing the role of raising the leg.

Without the patella the knee joint would have a much more difficult time bending and straightening. the patella like a fulcrum and the leg bones like levers.

The patella  can protect the knee joint, fractures of the patella are most often caused by a direct blow to the knee, such as a fall or motor vehicle accident.

How serious will be fractures of Patella ?

Kneecap fractures can be simple or complex.

A fracture of the patella is a fracture caused by trauma. Most types of patella fractures are closed fractures, in which the patella does not break through the skin.A serious patella fracture can make it difficult or even impossible to straighten your knee or walk.even prone to complications such as patella-femoral arthritis, delayed union of patella, and re-fracture of patella.

In this article, the cables we mentioned, according to the traditional method, commonly used materials are thick wire and steel wire. Although this type of material provides equal balance stress and multi-directional cohesion, it cannot limit the separation and displacement of the front during flexion and extension, so the stability is average, and external fixation with auxiliary materials is still required.

The principle of use is simple: the fracture fragments gather toward the center of the patella, resist the tension around the patella, and achieve the purpose of reduction and fixation. It is suitable for patients with comminuted fractures of the patella or transverse fractures of the middle segment of the patella with separation and displacement, and the articular surface is still smooth and intact after fracture reduction.

The cable (titanium cable, cable) is a cable-like structure composed of multiple strands of thin titanium wire, which is often used for internal fixation of bone trauma.

This material has excellent mechanical properties, good bio-compatibility, and corrosion and wear resistance. It is considered to be one of the best metal materials in the field of bio-medicine.

Titanium cable shows 3~6 times the tensile strength of steel wire with the same diameter, and its anti-fatigue performance is even more prominent than steel wire, reaching 9~48 times;

In addition, the titanium cable has good tissue compatibility, no toxic side effects, no foreign body reaction, can be left in the body without taking it out, and does not affect the patient's MRI examination.

How long after fractured patella can I walk?

People who fracture their patella may have difficulty walking or straightening their leg. Most people can return to typical activities within 3–6 months
